Shrines and Temples in Second Life
Secondlife Shrine's image

Just as in the real world, shrines and temples of Japanese style can be found in the virtual world of SecondLife. The users symbolically refer to these places created to ease their minds as shrines and temples, and freely visit there to enjoy the scenery and give a prayer. While some may be named after real world locations, they may be a homage to and not affiliated with any actual real world religious facility. There are a wide variety of beings enshrined in the shrines and temples of SecondLife, as if they embody the phrase, "God dwells in all things."

What is a Goshuin?
Goshuin image

A goshuin is a stamp with handwriting on Japanese paper with the date, used as proof of a visit to the shrine or temple. "Collecting Goshuin" is also popular in the real world, in which people keep a special goshuin stampbook, and visit shrines and temples to record their goshuin in it. When they fill up one book, it's time for a new one!

About the Goshuin Project

In January 2024, a total of 64 shrines and temples joined an activity called the Goshuin Project to distribute their own unique goshuin stamp textures. The textures were collected in a stampbook and a display panel, contributing to the creation of memories for SecondLife users. Also, those who came from outside Japan enjoyed virtually traveling to a foreign country by experiencing Japanese customs and culture.
